I am a geologist, environmentalist, conservationist, and an artist. Nature is the common denominator. My expression of art is a summation of a lifetime of experience.

I was born on 24 February 1937 in Sioux City, Iowa and married Kay E. Mortrude (artist) in December of 1958.

I took up painting in 1999 and discovered its wonders and rewards. I am mostly self-taught through study of the better art books and completing more than 100 paintings a year. I also painted with a local, accomplished artist for one and a half years. My wife has also been very helpful in my development as an artist. As a member, founder, and president of the Plein Air Painters of Oregon, I have received much help and encouragement from the fellow artist members.

Within the context of nature, I record my impression of awe and wonderment, the mystique, the prevailing atmosphere, and a sense of discovery. I also capture the historical aspects of nature and man-made artifacts that are subject to vanishing with time. This is done with brush, canvas, board and oil paints. My painting style is representational.

My ultimate goal is to become the very best artist that I am capable of being – a lifetime of learning.

In 2008 my painting “Light on Zion” was added to the permanent art collection At the St. George Art Museum as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Zion National Park. This collection toured the US for two years.

In 2006 my painting “The Hills of Eastern Oregon” was juried into the Oil Painters of America national show in the Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana, and my painting “Newport Sunset” was juried into the Oil Painters of America in the Lee Youngman Gallery in Calistoga, California.

Over the years, my paintings have been juried into many show in Bend, Oregon.

Many individuals, including Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, residing in many states and in Europe, own my paintings. I have always donated paintings to charities that have requested them for fund raising. I have also donated paintings to the US Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Crook County Historical Museum.

I am a member of the Oil Painters of America, the Sage Brushers Art Society, the Northwest Pastel Society and am president of the Plein Air Painters of Oregon.
